Communications / Audience research

Being seen and being believed are different jobs.

People may discover a story in one place and look elsewhere to decide whether to trust it. New Reuters Institute research gives communications teams a useful reason to revisit what happens after the first impression.

The development

The Reuters Institute’s 15 September 2026 study examines how people define news across six countries. It describes participants using social platforms to encounter stories and established news sources to check or expand their understanding. The research is not a Greek audience study or a measure of corporate campaign effectiveness. Reuters Institute • 15 September 2026 • Six country research

One9Six / Working notes

Build a story a journalist can verify

An announcement describes what the organisation wants to say. A story explains why someone outside it should care. Construct the media pack around a specific change, its consequences and accessible evidence. Separate confirmed facts from projections and company opinion.

Apply this to your next project

  • Confirm publication permissions and any embargo explicitly.
  • Track accuracy, message inclusion and audience relevance alongside coverage count.
  • Correct material inaccuracies through a clear, documented process.

One9Six perspective

A communications plan needs both discovery and verification. A short video, executive post or interview may create initial attention. The next step should lead to a coherent body of evidence: a dated announcement, clear facts, accessible background and an informed spokesperson. Media relations and owned content should reinforce the same account of what happened.

For a complex investment or technology story, build the evidence before multiplying formats. If a key claim cannot survive a journalist’s follow up question, distributing it more widely increases the exposure of that weakness.

The next decision

Audit one upcoming announcement. Can a reader trace its central claim to evidence within two clicks? Can every spokesperson explain the same scope and limitations? Correct those gaps before commissioning more distribution.
